Fifty Moodlers from 25 different NHS and health organisations came together at the successful Moodling for Health conference on 21 January which was sponsored by UNISON and hosted by OLP. Conference attendees gave a warm welcome to Mary Myles (UNISON) for the opening speech and Moodle case study presentations from Linda Taylor (Hillingdon Hospital), Sally Shaw (North Cheshire Hospitals), and Jeff Burge (Oxleas NHS Trust).

elearning guides
March 2009
OLP launches a plain English collection of free e-learning guides covering a range of subjects - link to guides

OLP has been awarded the 'excellent' grade in a recent audit by the prestigious British Computer Society
March 2009
This rating confirms the high quality work on ITQs which was only started last year.

First ITQ certificates
September 2008
Congratulations to four members of staff at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow on success in achieving the nationally-recognised ITQ qualification. The staff are all members of the patient records team at the hospital. They gained the qualification through a mixture of online exams and submitting a portfolio of work-related IT tasks. The four were supported throughout by the OLP health care assistant project.

Greek links
OLP has made links with the Athens-based organisation HELMAC which is setting out to develop elearning. OLP chief executive Doug Gowan visited HELMAC in October and ran a training session for their staff. Possibilities for European funding to support this work are being looked at.

ITQ qualifications
OLP is now delivering the key new qualification ITQ. We are registered with the British Computer Society to accredit ITQs at level 2 and 3. We offer a complete service:

OLP staff are trained to assess and verify the qualification.

Celebration of learning event
Lifelong learning minister Bill Rammell presented awards to 17 OLP learners at a 'Celebration of Learning' event in Princess Alexander Hospital, Harlow. The union sponsored event on 18th January 2008 highlighted how NHS staff can improve their careers through learning at work. Pictured in the photo is Buena Cordero, OLP's accredited assessor, with learners on the new ITQ programme. The work at the hospital is part of an extensive OLP programme to support staff pay bands 1-4 in the health service.

Programmes for Health Care Assistants
OLP is now engaged in programmes to develop elearning support for Health Care Assistants, who number almost a quarter of a million staff in the NHS and related employers.

The programmes are being run in conjunction with the Department of Health's Widening Participation in Learning Strategy Unit, and the public sector trade union Unison. Contact Julie Bromwich for more information.

UNISON Widening Participation in Learning Project
This project is funded through the Union Learning Fund and is a collaborative project with management and health service trade unions within 3 Hospital Trusts and connected PCTs: The West Essex Health Economy, the Hillingdon Hospital in West London and The Homerton Hospital in East London.

It will run from May 2007 to March 2008. The aim of the project is to identify educational opportunities from Entry Level to Level 4 and progression pathways linked to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework and the Sector Skills Agreement, for staff in pay bands 1-4. Developing an e-learning strategy and delivering ITQs to health records staff is an integral part of the project.

The project also aims to strengthen union organisation and a culture of learning through the development of union learning reps.
